Mammoth 2009 Festival of Beers
The SCMB crew piled in the rental and buckled down for the long drive to Mammoth. Over the hill and through Yosemite we went and arrived at out plush condo Emily secured for us. A nice soak in the hot tub and a pint of 21st Amendment brew and we were as good as new. The festival was lively and fun, we made new friends, including sally the plastic doll. We had a nice flow of fans trying the brew and tried a few ourselves. Mammoth Festival of Beers is always the last full weekend in July, come and check us out next year!
Portland July 2009
Emily and Nicole headed north for some fun and work in the nation's most celebrated craft beer city! Oregon's Brewers Fest, beer sampling and a trip to Hagg lake were among the highlights. They learned how to make sake and tasted some fresh hops from Emily's uncles garden. They returned with a relaxed attitude and a cool buzz. Cheers and thanks to all of those who hosted us, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewery loves you!

Ginger's Winter Warmer
Twas the night before….

GINGER HAS ARRIVED!!!
Just in time for the holidays!

Smooth on approach, spicy on your lips, and warming you where it counts. The warmth and holiday spice of Ginger, will compliment all of your favorite seasonal dishes, roasted turkey, pumpkin pie and figgy toffee pudding. ABV 6.4

SAUSAGE FEST 2008!!!
SAUSAGEFEST RETURNS TO SANTA CRUZ
On October 4, 2008 from 2p.m. until 7p.m. Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing will be paying their respects to the sausage at their second annual SAUSAGEFEST. This year they will be grilling up Corralitos sausages and serving them in Kelly’s French Bakery, Parker House rolls. Behind the scenes, the brewers have also been working on their homemade condiments; freshly fermented coriander sauerkraut, IPA whole grain mustard and Devout Stout catsup. Also, fresh apple cider, popcorn, and cold delicious Gizdich Apples!
There’s a new Brewster in town! Kelly Vaillancourt, Good Times photographer and self proclaimed, ‘Libation Specialist’ muscles her way into the brewery with a new beer. Kelly’s ESB will be released at the SAUSAGEFEST and only available at the brewery. This ESB recipe blends seven different malts and four hop varieties and is sure to compliment the fall weather and sausages.
Get up and dance! For the first time ever, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing has obtained a sound permit! The GARY SMITH BLUES BAND will have beer and sausage lovers, moving and grooving. There’s Gary, the “Godfather” of Bay Area blues harmonica and Mike Mongiello on the guitar, along with the rest of the group to get you off your tail.
This event is sure to be a good time. Save gas, stay in town, drink beer, boogie down and pay your respects to the SAUSAGE.

Poor Man's Hop Engine!
You may have noticed that my blogging really comes to a standstill during the Summer. I have one good reason why: The boys are out for SUMMER! We're like a whirling dervish. Working, and on vacation and sucking the creative energies right out of me.
I haven't even had time to update on all of the amazing festivities that took place in our beer world... maybe I'll be able to recap later.
In the meantime, I thought I'd post what I'm calling the Poor Man's Hop Engine. We were in Portland for a family wedding and hoping to get to the Horse Brass for some beer out of the hop engine. Having such a good time at my uncle's farm, we never got off Sauvie's Island. He did; however, create a hop engine of his own - with hops grown from his farm.
We drank 'Session' beer through this fine piece of machinery and boy was it a treat! Really picked up the fresh hop oils.
Even my grandpa loved it. What do you expect from a beer crafting family?

Welcome Reception at Stone Brewing, CBC
Last night Stone Brewing Company with the support of Briess, HopUnion and whoever else, welcomed 1700 brewers and wholesalers into their establishment - allowing almost free range of their entire brewing facility, from kettle to keg operations to cold storage of their distributed brands. They highlighted their amazing building design, brewing designs, and the imaginative use of stones and rocks in their bar, restaurant, bathrooms and gardens.
There were beers everywhere you turned. Stone had all of their beers flowing and a variety of other San Diego breweries had stations with tapped delights as well. I sampled the following : Alesmith Brown Ale, The Lost Abbey, Ballast's new IPA, Pizza Port, Stone's Pale, IPA, Oaked Arrogant, Vanilla Porter, and regular Bastard.
Beer celebrity sightings, brewery operation fantasizing, and speculation on which brewer might be the drunkest, were the activies of the evening. In some kind of Dante-esque torture, Chad stood by, unable to taste his favorite elyxirs due to a unfortunately timed acquisition of strep throat.
Standing in the luminous concrete lobby, sipping Oaked Arrogant Bastard and Vanilla Bean Porter, with my friend Terri Burch of Premium Beverage Alliance, we noticed that the weiner to bun ratio (as she puts it) was pretty ridiculous. Mark, from Santa Cruz Aleworks, commented on the lack of women, "C'mon, isn't it really an event for men?" To which, we quickly made our departure to the women's restroom which to our delight, had no line, for once.

San Diego, here we come!
It is the Craft Beer Convention this week, followed by the World Beer Cup. We are expecting to take home many awards this year. Just kidding. We are, however, looking forward to the experience! Especially the bus trip to Stone. And since we are working on designs for a new, GIGANTIC, sustainable brewhouse, a little information gathering is definitely in order.
So watch out San Diego - Chad is back on his home turf this week.
Pictures and interesting factoids to follow.

Metro Dish
I haven't had a lot of time to write my own words.. but this was a nice write up last week by Amber Turpin of the Metro in my favorite food column...
Savory Suds
In July, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing held its second Homebrew to Probrew contest. After six months of aging and refinement, the winning organic American-style barleywine was finally unveiled. Dave Bossie , the champion home brewer responsible for the creation, started his hobby in 1992 after his wife bought him a home-brew kit. "It's been downhill ever since," he jokes. The March 19 release party featured more than just an opportunity to sample this bold yet delicately fragrant and floral ale; it also featured six diverse food stations demonstrating both good and bad flavor pairings with the beer.
The brewery increasingly emphasizes food and beer pairings, in keeping with the new trend that sees beermaker dinners with special menus at top restaurants. Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing is among 48 independent craft brewers in the United States invited to the culmination of this movement at Savor: An American Craft Beer & Food Experience in Washington, D.C., on May 16-17. "We've always felt that the robust flavors of our organic ales are perfectly matched with brilliant foods. We're excited to be a part of this groundbreaking event," said owner Emily Thomas .

Expo West Tomorrow
I love this event! Halloween for adults and this year my mom and I have tickets. I plan on leaving that place with more sultry smooth chapsticks, energy bars, minty waters, organic chocolate, raw products, and vodka in my belly, than ever before. Well, probably not the vodka in my belly since we have to pour beer all night, but you get the picture. And this year, I don't plan on having my feet filmed for any weirdo japanese foot fetish flip flop movies!
Here's to a few hundred thousand natural product vendors and the folks that love em!

Trouble Brewing Article - Beer Business in Jeopardy?
Trouble Brewing
A massive hops shortage and barley slow-down have the microbrew industry on the boil.
By Richard Wilson
Stock up on American microbrews now, for a current availability crisis affecting two of beer's main ingredients could force many popular beers and even entire microbreweries off the market within the next year. There are those who believe that the shortage of hops and barley will actually be a boon to beer; without them at the ready, brewers may follow creative new whimsies in fermenting. Perhaps there will be herbs like heather tips, yarrow and chamomile to flavor beers, and rice, wheat and honey to create the alcohol. But one thing seems almost certain: The production volume of those big bitter beers and high-alcohol whoppers that hopheads love so dearly will almost certainly decline.
